Day 6 - Moreno Point and Tagus Cove, Isabela Island
We had a very busy day. After breakfast we went for a difficult walk on lava fields on Isabela Island, at a place called Moreno Point. We saw a lagoon which is cut off from the sea at low tide and temporarily traps many creatures. When the tide rises they can escape through a channel back into the sea. We were at the lagoon at low tide and saw about 5 green sea turtles, many sharks and puffer fish. On the shore there were Galapagos Flightless Cormorants, Galapagos Penguins and a lava heron.
On returning to the boat we went for our first deep water snorkelling trip but the water was extremely cold and murky and we didn’t stay for long as it was impossible to see anything.
During lunch the boat set sail for Tagus Cove on the north west coast of Isabela, where we went snorkelling again but this time in much clearer water. We found ourselves swimming alongside Green Sea Turtles and Sea Lions. There were also a lot of colourful fish in the sea.
Our final excursion was a late afternoon steep walk up to Darwin Lake but this time on volcanic ash which is easier to walk on. Here we saw many finches and Mocking Birds.
