Day 4 - Arrival in Galapagos
Map of area
We left Quito on schedule and flew to Galapagos via Guayaquil arriving at about midday. We were one of the last off the plane and while in the immigration queue I realised that Michael Portillo was immediately behind us. I said hello and he said hello back and gave me a lovely smile. He was with his wife, brother and sister in law.
We were quickly
transferred to the Solaris Yacht which is our home for the next 7
nights. The yacht is full with 14 of us from the UK and 2 from the
US. 2 of them come from nearby Packington, near Ashby de la Zouch, so not far from us.
After a safety briefing and lunch we went on our first excursion to Bachas Beach on Santa Cruz Island which is very close to where we boarded the boat and we could see the airport on Baltra Island from the beach.
The Green Sea Turtles have just started nesting and there was plenty of evidence of tracks where the female has made her way to the beach at night and laid her eggs.
We saw many birds including Blue Footed Boobies, Frigate Birds, Pelicans, Flamingos, Galapagos Warblers, a Great Blue Heron, Black Necked Galapagos Stilts and a Lava Gull as well as plenty of Sally Lightfoot Crabs.
